ARTIST STATEMENT

Angela Errico, born into an Italian family living in Brooklyn, was raised with the old-world, traditional expectations of a woman: obey father, support husband, and live for the success of one's children. In the 1960's, women around her began to fight for social independence and true equality.

As the world around her began to open up, Angela took off the apron, dropped the dishtowel and headed for the foundries and industrial yards to carry out her dream of being an artist. While battling to find a balance between the old-world and the new, Angela narrates the female life experience touching on the multiple paradigms that were prevalent throughout her own life. She experimented with a variety of mediums and often asks the viewer to resolve the meaning of her work in their own way. Is a steel wedding dress a symbol of strength or imprisonment?

Angela finds this focus again in her paintings, where circus elements can provide an excellent stage to discuss various social situations, more specific to her own life. Humor is key. Angela continues to pursue art in unpredictable ways. Her shows often act a s a platform for viewers to interpret art through the lense of their own values, sparking firey interpretations from traditional and liberal fans alike.
